Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program (MFTIP)

The Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program (MFTIP) was introduced by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to increase forestry awareness on private lands and provide a tax break to help offset any associated costs. Under MFTIP, landowners must have at least 10 acres of forest on their property. Once the plan is approved, the Managed Forest Area is reassessed and taxed at 25% of the normal rate or the equivalent farmland rate. The remainder of the property is reassessed and taxed at the normal rate.

REGEN FORESTRY has designated Managed Forest Plan Approvers (MFPA) #230. In the past 9 years we have written and/or approved over 50 managed forest plans covering over 10,000 acres. Under the 10-year plan, we incorporate the landowner's objectives and help design activities for them to meet their objectives.

Activity Examples:

Environmental Protection
  • Plant trees to protect watercourses or connect existing forests
  • Identify rare plant species on the property
Forest Products
  • Selective logging to remove diseased and dying trees and gain revenue
  • Pre-commercial thinning of young forests (15-30 years) to improve forest vigour, reduce rotation age, improve quality of trees and species (sugar maple, beech, yellow birch, oak, poplar, spruce, pine, fir)
  • Pruning of pine plantations to improve future value forest products
