Reforestation

Over the last 9 years Regen Forestry has planted over 600,000 tree seedlings on private land. Each year we have progressively increased our planting land base across Ontario. In 2005 and 2007, REGEN Forestry participated as a Local Program Delivery Agency (LPDA) with Trees Ontario and Natural Resources Canada. The purpose of this program is to increase tree planting on private lands with funding available to landowners whose property meet certain criteria.

Tree seedlings can be planted for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to:

  • Environmental - Planting open areas for wildlife or to connect fragmented forested areas
  • Economic - Planting open farm fields to create a long-term investment (for the kids or grand children)
  • Aesthetic - Planting along roadsides, farm fields or vacant areas to create a more natural setting or windbreak

There are many things that should be considered in successful tree planting operation. These include:

  • Landowner objectives
  • Proper seedling stock for your area (local seed zone)
  • Species available
  • Soils, climate
  • Site preparation (cultivating)
  • Spacing
  • Chemical tending
  • Future tending requirements

A tree planting prescription is the safest way to draw up a plan for any tree plant. If you are interested in planting or have any questions with regards to planning a plant, feel free to call or email us.

Chemical Tending

Chemical Tending is a common practice for both site preparation before tree planting and post planting to control competing vegetation. Although not always necessary, chemical control is the most practical and cost efficient method available. The two main chemicals we use are simazene and round up. Simazene is a pre-emergent that prevents seed from germinating whereas round up is a foliar application that must touch the green of the plant to control successfully.

REGEN provides the following chemical services to our clients:

  • Non-shielded spot spraying with simazene
  • Shielded spot spraying with round up
  • ATV band spraying
  • Boom broadcast spraying
  • Stem application
Non-chemical Techniques

We also offer a variety of non-chemical techniques for landowners that do not wish to use chemical applications. These include brush mats, wood chips, tubex, etc. In general, smaller plants and areas near a residence make sense for these techniques as they can cost upwards of 10 times the cost of chemical tending.
